How to Say Years in German: 1992, 2008, 1975
Someone tells you their birth year, or the Baujahr of the flat you are viewing, and a single unbroken word goes past: neunzehnhundertzweiundneunzig. In English that is four syllables. In German it is nine, glued together, with the digits in an order you did not expect. By the time you have finished decoding it the conversation has moved on.
Years deserve their own guide because they do not follow the rules you learned for ordinary German numbers. A year is not just a four-digit number read out. It has its own pattern, that pattern changed at the year 2000, and the two halves sound completely different. This guide covers both, with real audio you can test yourself against.

Two patterns, split at the year 2000
Everything here reduces to one fork. Which side of 2000 is the year on?
| Range | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 1100 to 1999 | counted in hundreds | 1975 = neunzehnhundertfünfundsiebzig |
| 2000 onward | counted in thousands | 2008 = zweitausendacht |
English does something similar, which is why nineteen seventy-five and two thousand eight feel natural to you already. German just keeps the word hundert in the middle of the older pattern and writes the whole thing as one word.
How to say years in German from 1100 to 1999
Take the first two digits, say them as a number, add hundert, then say the last two digits as a number. That is the whole rule.
1975 becomes neunzehn plus hundert plus fünfundsiebzig, written and spoken as one word.
The catch is in that last pair. German says two-digit numbers units first, so 75 is fünfundsiebzig, five-and-seventy. That reversal does not stop at the year boundary. It happens inside the year, right at the end, exactly where your attention is starting to slip.
The trap in one line. In zweiundneunzig you hear zwei before neunzig, but the answer is 92, not 29. If you write digits down in the order you hear them, every 1900s year with a mixed pair will come out wrong.
Round decades are shorter than you expect
When the last two digits are a round decade there is no units word at all, so the year ends abruptly. Learners often keep waiting for a syllable that never arrives and miss the next word instead.
At the other extreme, 1999 is about as long as a German year gets. It is worth hearing the two back to back, because the length itself is information: a long tail means a mixed pair, a short one means a round decade.
Years from 2000 onward
At 2000 the pattern changes completely. The year is now counted in thousands, and hundert disappears.
| Year | German | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 2000 | zweitausend | just the thousand, nothing after it |
| 2001 | zweitausendeins | eins, not ein |
| 2008 | zweitausendacht | no word for the two zeros |
| 2019 | zweitausendneunzehn | teens are a single word, not reversed |
| 2026 | zweitausendsechsundzwanzig | reversal is back from 21 onward |
The 2001 case is worth its own listen. Standing alone, one is eins, and that is the form a year uses. Zweitausendein is wrong.
One thing German does not do: the English habit of saying twenty twenty for 2020. There is no zwanzighundert. 2020 is zweitausendzwanzig, and it will stay in the thousands pattern for the rest of the century.
Never say "in 1992"
English puts in in front of a year. German does not. The year sits in the sentence bare:
- Er ist 1992 geboren. He was born in 1992.
- 1975 haben wir das Haus gekauft. In 1975 we bought the house.
If you want a preposition, you need the fuller phrase im Jahr 1992 or im Jahre 1992. Saying in 1992 is understood, but it is one of the clearest English-speaker tells there is. For listening it matters too: because nothing announces the year, it can arrive with no warning at all.
Where years actually come at you
- Birth years. Forms, doctors, registration offices, and small talk. Usually the fastest one you will hear, because people say their own year automatically.
- Baujahr. The build year of a flat, a house, or a car. Central to any viewing or sale, and often the number the whole price argument rests on.
- Jahrgang. Wine, school cohorts, and sports teams. Jahrgang neunzehnhundertachtundachtzig means the 1988 cohort.
- Contracts and leases. Start and end years, read out at speed by someone who has read them a thousand times.
- Full dates. The year is the last chunk of a spoken German date, so it arrives when your concentration is already spent on the day and month.
How to train this specifically
Years reward a narrow kind of practice. Three things worth drilling separately:
- Hear the fork first. Before decoding anything, catch whether the year started with neunzehn or zweitausend. That single decision halves the problem.
- Wait for the end. With 1900s years, the tens digit is the last thing said. Train yourself not to commit to a digit until the word finishes.
- Use length as a clue. A short tail is a round decade or a 2000s year. A long one is a mixed pair from the 1900s.
Every clip on this page is a real question from the Zahlhaus practice corpus, the same audio the app uses. If you could follow them at full speed, the app will push you faster. If you could not, that is exactly the gap to work on.

How do you say years in German?
German uses two patterns, and the split is the year 2000. From 1100 to 1999 a year is counted in hundreds: 1975 is neunzehnhundertfünfundsiebzig, literally nineteen hundred five and seventy. From 2000 onward it switches to thousands: 2008 is zweitausendacht. There is no hundert in the modern pattern and no filler word for the zeros.
How do you say 1992 in German?
1992 is neunzehnhundertzweiundneunzig. It breaks into neunzehn (nineteen), hundert (hundred), and zweiundneunzig (ninety-two, said as two and ninety). It is one word in writing and one unbroken run of sound in speech, which is why it feels much longer than the English nineteen ninety-two.
How do you say 2008 in German?
2008 is zweitausendacht, literally two thousand eight. German does not insert a word for the zeros, so there is no equivalent of the English two thousand and eight. The year is noticeably shorter than a 1900s year, which is a useful clue on its own.
Why do German years from the 1900s use hundert?
German counts years between 1100 and 1999 in hundreds rather than thousands, the same way English says nineteen seventy-five rather than one thousand nine hundred seventy-five. The difference is that German keeps the word hundert in the middle and joins everything into a single word, so 1975 becomes neunzehnhundertfünfundsiebzig.
Do you say "in" before a year in German?
No. Standard German drops the preposition, so it is Er ist 1992 geboren, not in 1992. If you want a preposition you use the fuller phrase im Jahr 1992 or im Jahre 1992. Saying in 1992 is one of the most recognisable English-speaker errors in German.
